The tenth edition of Designing Designers, the International Convention of University Courses in Design, is held during Euroluce 2009.
The first four editions of Designing Designers, 2000-2003, devoted to the examination and comparison of study methods and themes emerging from university teaching, took place “behind closed doors”. We then opened our doors to the public:
- in 2004 we focused our attention on the concrete rather than on the abstract, on real examples of “project planning” on the theme of “Designing Hospitality” rather than on reports of a theoretical/methodological nature;
- in 2005 we chose a broader-based, extremely topical theme, “Design Evolution by East & West”, in order to examine the role of design in terms of the similarities and differences between the two continents and to lay the foundations for a dialogic exchange between East and West;
- in 2006 taking the “Unbranded design for new user expectations, in East and West” as our theme, we explored just how taste and quali-quantitative predisposition towards non-designer consumer durables were likely to evolve in different parts of the world;
- in 2007 in conjunction with Euroluce 2007, we have dealt with “Light as an architectural matter”; the construction industry of the 21st century has new technological materials to work with: titanium, new metal alloys, composite materials, fibreglass, carbon fibre. Without a shadow of doubt, light is a sector in which innovation has led to new solutions: light-emitting diodes, optic fibres and transparent materials that become luminous have now become elements of architectural composition in their own right, just as columns, pilasters, pediments and peristyles;
- in 2008, on the occasion of SaloneUfficio, Designing Designers has chosen as a theme “Offices and workplaces for knowledge workers”: the office as a physical and virtual locus for cooperation, research and the processing and exchange of information, in which social organisational structures exist, made up of people who talk to each other, can see each other and interact in order to come up with multiple and often complex solutions.
In 2009, we explore a subject of great moment ”Where does light move to? Lighting design innovation scenarios”, which is split into four sections:
- LED for lighting
- Lighting for wellness
- Sustainable lighting and energy saving
- Lighting Art and Urban Design.
Our horizons have been steadily widening, therefore, but we are still firmly committed to the raison d'étre for Designing Designers: an open forum, an opportunity for round-table debate, for the benefit of all those who, in different roles, contribute to the evolution of design.
Designing Designers is a Cosmit spa initiative organised by Fondazione Cosmit Eventi; promoted by the Facoltà del Design of the Politecnico di Milano in conjunction with FederlegnoArredo.
