Cosmit is the company that organises the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, launched in 1961 by a small coalition of furniture manufacturers from within the FederlegnoArredo trade association with the aim of promoting the exportation of Italian furniture, and which soon became the most prestigious international event in the world of furniture design and production. The Salone quickly proved itself to be an excellent marketing vehicle for a highly fragmented industry (more than 13,000 companies employing 205,000 people; a national distribution network comprising 20,000 points of sale) that would otherwise have lacked the means to express its overall potential.
In addition to the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which is held every April in Milan, Cosmit is the organisational force behind the biennial events Euroluce/International Lighting ExhibitionSaloneUfficio/International Biennial Workspace Exhibition (odd years), EuroCucina/International Kitchen Furniture Exhibition, the International Bathroom Exhibition (even years), and the annual International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition and the SaloneSatellite.
Taken together, these events named “i Saloni” occupy an area of nearly 230,000 square metres at the new Milan Fairgrounds in Rho, and represent the production of about 2,500 of the most dynamic and creative companies on the international market, not to mention that of the 600 young designers of the SaloneSatellite. They are visited by more than 290,000 industry professionals each year, more than 50% of whom come from 160 countries around the world.
Responding to the request of a significant number of veteran Milanese exhibitors, in 2005 Cosmit launched “i Saloni WorldWide”, held annually in Moscow in October.
Since 1997 Cosmit has been headquartered in an historic building in the centre of Milan, Foro Buonaparte 65, along with FederlegnoArredo, the Federation of wood, cork, furniture and furnishing manufacturers.
Cosmit is a member of the ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and ADI (Association for Industrial Design).
